What to do about a fake Microsoft support call

Unexpected callers who say your computer has a virus or licence problem are commonly trying to frighten you into giving Remote access: A way for someone to view or control a computer from another location. Full definition or payment.

Do not follow instructions

Do not install software, visit a web address or read out a code.

End the call

You do not need to argue or prove anything. Hang up.

Do not call the displayed number back

Caller ID can be falsified. Find support numbers independently.

If you installed software, disconnect

Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable and follow the remote-access scam guide.

If you paid or shared banking details, contact the bank

Use the number on the card or official bank website.

Report the scam

Report it to Scamwatch and keep screenshots or payment information if safe to do so.
