Technology glossary in plain English

administrator

A user account allowed to install programs and change important settings on a computer.

antivirus

Software that looks for known harmful programs and suspicious activity.

backup

A second copy of important files stored somewhere separate from the original device.

browser

The program used to open websites, such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.

cache

Temporary saved information that can make websites and programs load faster.

cloud storage

Files stored through an internet service so they can be accessed from approved devices.

driver

Software that helps the computer communicate with hardware such as a printer or graphics device.

factory reset

A reset that removes settings and may erase data, returning a device close to its original state.

IP address

A number used to identify a device on a network.

malware

Unwanted or harmful software that may damage a device, show unwanted ads or steal information.

Microsoft 365

Microsoft subscription services that can include Office apps, email, Teams and cloud storage.

Microsoft account

An account used for Microsoft services such as Windows, Outlook, OneDrive and Microsoft 365.

modem

A device that connects your home or office equipment to the internet service.

NBN connection box

The NBN-supplied device used for some connection types before your router.

network

A group of connected devices that can communicate with each other.

operating system

The main software that runs a device, such as Windows, macOS, Android or iOS.

remote access

A way for someone to view or control a computer from another location.

router

The device that shares the internet connection with computers, phones and other devices, usually through Wi-Fi.

two-factor authentication

An extra sign-in check, such as a code or app approval, used in addition to a password.

USB

A common cable and socket type used to connect devices or storage drives.

Wi-Fi

A wireless way for nearby devices to connect to a router or network.

Windows Update

The Windows feature that downloads security fixes, improvements and some device drivers.
