How to check Windows Update safely

Updates can fix security problems and improve reliability. Use the built-in Windows tool rather than websites that claim to update everything.

Save your work

Close important documents and connect a laptop to power.

Open the update page

Choose Start, Settings, then Windows Update. This is the official Windows Update: The Windows feature that downloads security fixes, improvements and some device drivers. Glossary screen.

Check for updates

Choose Check for updates. Allow normal security and quality updates to download.

Review optional updates carefully

Optional updates are not always required. Avoid installing an unfamiliar driver unless it solves a known problem.

Restart when ready

Choose Restart when you have time. Do not turn the computer off during the update.

Check again afterwards

After Windows returns, open Windows Update again and check whether another small update remains.
