What to do when computer storage is full

A nearly full drive can make updates fail and the computer feel slow. The safest approach is to find what is using space before deleting anything.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 15–30 minutes You will need: Time to review files and, if available, an external drive.
1

Check how much space is free

Open Settings, System, then Storage. Note the total and free space.

2

Empty the Recycle Bin carefully

Open the Recycle Bin and check it before emptying. Files are harder to recover afterwards.

3

Use Temporary files

In Storage settings, open Temporary files. Review each category. Do not select Downloads unless you have checked that folder.

4

Sort personal folders by size

Check Downloads, Videos, Pictures and Desktop. Move old large files to a checked backup: A second copy of important files stored somewhere separate from the original device. Glossary drive if you still need them.

5

Remove unused programs normally

Use Settings, Apps, Installed apps. Uninstall only programs you recognise and no longer use.

6

Check cloud files

If using cloud storage: Files stored through an internet service so they can be accessed from approved devices. Glossary, confirm important files are fully uploaded before choosing any option that removes local copies.
