List important folders

Include Documents, Pictures, Desktop, Downloads and any business or program-specific folders.

Make a separate backup first

Create a Backup: A second copy of important files stored somewhere separate from the original device. Full definition before beginning the transfer where possible.

Choose the transfer method

Use an external drive, direct migration tool or trusted Cloud storage: Files stored through an internet service so they can be accessed from approved devices. Full definition.

Copy rather than move

Copying leaves the original files in place until you confirm the result.

Check totals and open samples

Compare folder sizes and open documents, photos and videos from the new computer.

Check special data separately

Email archives, browser favourites, accounting files and program databases may need their own export process.

Wait before erasing the old computer

Use the new computer for several days and keep the backup.
