NBN not working: basic checks before calling

Your retail internet provider normally manages your service. NBN supplies the network, but many faults should first be reported to the provider you pay.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 10–20 minutes You will need: Mobile data if available and access to the internet equipment.

Check whether all devices are affected

If only one device fails, the issue is probably not the NBN service.

Check provider and NBN status

Use mobile data to view your provider outage page and the official NBN network-status page.

Look at equipment lights

Photograph the normal and unusual lights on the NBN connection box: The NBN-supplied device used for some connection types before your router. Full definition, modem and router.

Check power and cables

Make sure power plugs are secure. Avoid unplugging fibre or unfamiliar fixed cables.

Restart in the correct order

Power the NBN or modem device first, wait for it to settle, then power the router.

Contact your provider with notes

Tell them when it began, which devices are affected, what the lights show and which checks you completed.
