Computer will not start: safe checks first

A computer that will not start can have a simple power problem or a more serious hardware or storage fault. These checks avoid opening the device.

Difficulty: Easy Time: 10–20 minutes You will need: The original charger and access to a power point.
1

Check the power source

Test the wall socket with another safe device. Reseat the charger at the wall and computer. For a desktop, check the power switch on the back is on.

2

Look and listen

Press the power button once. Notice whether lights, fans, beeps or the screen appear. This information helps identify whether the problem is power, display or startup.

3

Disconnect extra devices

Remove USB drives, printers, docks and unnecessary accessories, then try once more. Leave the keyboard, mouse and screen connected on a desktop.

4

Check the screen

Increase brightness. On a desktop, confirm the monitor is on and the cable is firmly connected. If possible, test another known-working screen or cable.

5

Perform a simple power reset

Turn the computer off. Disconnect power for 30 seconds. Reconnect power and try again. Do not open the case or remove an internal battery.

6

Read the message

If a message appears, photograph it before choosing anything. Avoid options that mention erase, format, reset or reinstall until important files are protected.
