What to do after entering details on a fake website

The correct response depends on what you entered. Act from a separate trusted device if the original device may also be compromised.

Write down what was entered

Record whether it was a password, card number, bank login, identity document or contact information.

Change reused passwords

Change the affected account first, then every account using the same or similar password.

Secure the email account

Check recovery details, forwarding rules and recent sign-ins.

Contact the bank for financial details

Use the number on the card or official bank website. Ask about blocking cards or transactions.

Contact the organisation involved

Use its official website or app, not links from the suspicious message.

Watch for follow-up scams

The scammer may use the information to sound convincing later.

Report and get identity support

Report to Scamwatch and contact IDCARE if identity information was exposed.
