Basic phone or tablet setup checklist

Take your time and write down which account belongs to the device. Do not create multiple new accounts unless necessary.

Charge and connect to Wi-Fi

Connect the charger and join a trusted Wi-Fi: A wireless way for nearby devices to connect to a router or network. Full definition network.

Sign in to the main account

Use the existing Apple, Google or Microsoft account: An account used for Microsoft services such as Windows, Outlook, OneDrive and Microsoft 365. Full definition where appropriate. Record the recovery email and phone number.

Install updates

Open the device update settings and install normal system updates.

Add email

Use the built-in mail app or the official provider app. Test sending and receiving.

Turn on backup

Check whether photos, contacts and device settings are included in the selected Cloud storage: Files stored through an internet service so they can be accessed from approved devices. Full definition or backup service.

Review security

Set a screen lock and enable Two-factor authentication: An extra sign-in check, such as a code or app approval, used in addition to a password. Full definition on important accounts.
